  • My e-mail was down all morning. This made me feel lonely.

  • I have lots of work to do, and little motivation. This makes me feel pathetic.

  • I am trying to forge ahead, nonetheless. This makes me feel, well, slightly less pathetic.

  • It's gray and rainy outside. This makes me feel sleepy.

  • #2 climbed onto the sofa for the first time yesterday. I'd say he'll be walking any minute now, but I thought that about #1, and he proved me wrong. Except that I really think #2 will move from furniture surfing to walking out into open space really soon.

  • I am so pleased that the Giants won last night's boring for three quarters, then suspenseful and entertaining Superbowl! Because I really don't want Mike Belichick's name mentioned in the same breath as Chuck Noll's. Cheating should not be rewarded, dammit.

  • Whichever pretzel bakery supplies the little market in my office building has been overbaking the pretzels lately. I prefer them softer and chewier. Sigh.

  • The crazy office manager, henceforth to be known herein (as she is in the office) as the Irish Mangler, ordered weird flavored cocoa instead of good (!) old Ghirardelli. I wanted to be mad, but the mint-flavored cocoa was actually pretty good.

  • I'm having trouble focusing on just one thing at a time, so I'm being a hummingbird, flitting from one project to the next. I'm getting a surprising amount done this way.

  • I'm designing the first mail piece to be created around the stellar capabilities of our new color copier. We're going to need to have more professional photos taken of our healthcare work! Because bad photos? Look even worse when printed well.

  • I reposted last week's Financial Accounting comments to this week's board, along with some additions. I am considering staying at work an hour or so to do the work for the other class. Because how cool would it be to have the entire week's work finished on Monday? Answer: Really, really cool.

  • Golden Globe noms: Pushing Daisies, yay! Yay, Mad Men! But when, oh when will it be out on DVD? I need my parents to see it. Especially Mom Phooey, who worked there, then.

  • This is the spousage's new gastroenterologist. He's a rock star. Among gastroenterologists, anyway. Click for more on him. )

  • Bacteria-contaminated Merck vax. Oh, noes! Only the J-man might have gotten any of the possibly tainted product, and he was fine and dandy after his shots. So, no worries. Except the unstoppable mama kind. And the annoyance at the Republicans, whose idea of tort reform would make it virtually impossible to sue Merck about this.

  • More holiday gifts are coming and going at work. It's making me feel rather acquisitive. Not that I need a double leather wine tote. But they are so soft and pretty! And would be more elegant to carry to our local BYOs...

  • Must pay bills. Must. Must. Today. Ugh. This is why the few remaining ones that aren't set to auto-deduct need to be. So I don't have to think about them. Because, ugh.

  • Ugh.

  • The New Adventures of Queen Victoria! Thanks to [info]theodicy for introducing me to such wonderfulness. Today's is particularly funny:
    Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

  • Had a delightful, if humid and sweaty, walk to work with the SIL, who treated me to a breakfast smoothie. Mmm, watermelon juice! And strawberry and banana and protein powder. But mainly, watermelon juice! Which almost immediately dribbled entirely down the placket of my shirt. It was worth it. Yum.

  • The juice rinsed out without leaving a stain, but then I realized that the hem of the shirt is bleach-stained. (Or whatever you call it. It's not really a stain - it's more an absence of stain (color). Anyway.) I hadn't worn it in ages, as the last time I tried, it was too small. I may have been pregnant at the time, but maybe not. So I put it on assuming it wouldn't fit and I could just put it in the to-go pile. I was delighted that it fit. It's a lovely shade of lavender, stretch cotton, 3/4 sleeves... pretty much my ideal shirt. And now it goes, after all. Ah, well. I bought it at Target for $12, and it was a wardrobe staple for two years. I think I got my money's worth.

  • However, since that shirt fit, the even nicer one I bought on clearance from Kiyonna, which did not fit last winter, might well fit now. Something to look forward to.

  • Can someone please explain to me why Philly's fireworks were scheduled for 10:30 PM? NYC's were over by 10, DC's by 9:15! Did we really need to hear from Patti LaBelle and Hall & Oates and whoever else dragged the evening so late? Of course, the rainstorms forced them to close the parkway and send people home fireworksless. Only afterward did they decide to do the fireworks anyway, for the TV audience. Sheesh.

  • I had a hard time falling asleep last night. Maybe because the spousage was away? I watched The Five Senses, which I hadn't seen since its original release. Nice movie.

  • Work is so quiet today! Anyone with vacation time and no deadlines is off. It's kind of nice. Fortunately all my favorite peeps are here. Perhaps we'll go out for a nice lunch. Or bring back takeout and eat in the conference room and schmooze.

  • #2 was teething something fierce yesterday. I could hear him wailing in the background when Pop Phooey called to verify the dosage of the teething remedy. Poor bunny. However, he was fine when I got home, and slept well, and will hopefully have a good day today.

  • Along with the bosslet, I tried to go to IKEA yesterday to pick up some things for a work event tomorrow. However, they were closed. Lightning struck their transformer, and they had no power. We went to Target, instead.

  • My back hurts. I woke up with some soreness in the vicinity of my left shoulderblade one morning last week, and it hasn't gotten any better. In fact, it's gotten worse. In addition to the pain, I've got sporadic numbness in my left arm and hand. Pinched nerve, probably. Have left a message with Balance about a massage. And maybe I should see the chiropractor there, too? Ow.

  • I may have started a flame war on my college alumni e-mail list. For my own sanity, I have deleted the rest of the thread unread. Discussion on that list is like the ones we'd have in the dorm pits in the wee small hours - 95% frivolous nonsense, and 5% worthwhile content. If only there were a filter that could tell the difference between the two!

  • Work is good. It's nice to be with my work peeps again, and I'm being quite productive. Yesterday I finished a quals package that wasn't due til today! That's rare around here. Of course we've got a monster package due tomorrow, but the whole team's involved in that one.

  • After coming within shouting distance of getting all the clean laundry that lives atop the washer and dryer folded, hung, or otherwise put away, the giant pile has returned. Ugh. Ugh.

  • I love it when #1 comes bounding up the stairs to see us in the morning. He clambers onto the bed and we snuggle for a bit. Before the bouncing begins. I think #2 reserves his most spectacular smiles for his big brother.

For some reason, #2 was especially wakeful last night. Not at night, exactly, but in the morning hours between four and eight AM. Hours when I really need to be sleeping.

At one point, I seriously considered just letting him cry.

* * *

There was a wedding in the sweet wee chapel at the Unitarian church where The Toddler's music class is held, so we were moved downstairs to the basement. It wasn't a bad space, actually - there was a very colorful rug, and a small stage at one end.

There's been a boy with a significant degree of autism in class this semester. He obviously enjoys the music, even if he doesn't fully participate. There's another boy who is not as far along the spectrum, but he's less involved than the other boy. Or maybe he's just shy.

The Toddler's friend Sebastian (one of two Sebastians we know) was in class today. Usually we just see him in the square. His mother plays some intrument or other in the Philadelphia Orchestra. The Toddler was so happy to see him. We should arrange a playdate.

* * *

We need to make a decision about preschool. I think it would be good for The Toddler to spend more time with other children, in a (slightly) more formal setting. However, I find it unbelievably angst-making to even think about. Perhaps because I am practically apoplectic about the thought of real school. So many of the public schools here are just abysmal, and the private ones are insanely expensive. And yet I don't want to move to the burbs.

Good thing we've got three more years to sort that out.

* * *

I wanted a giant cheeseburger for dinner. I've been craving those a lot lately. Maybe I'm iron-deficient? Anyway, I talked myself out of it. I had a bowl of cottage cheese with bread and butter pickles, instead. Not nearly as much fun. But I have to finish the cottage cheese before it goes bad, and it's already nearly a week past its sell-by date.

Fortunately, sparkling water with a generous splash of cranberry-pomegranate juice livens up even the most mundane meal.
